Team USA Departs Today for First International Tournament of 2019

25 boxers left Colorado today to represent Team USA at the 2019 Strandja Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria to kick off a busy year of international competitions.

Nine World Championship medalists headline the team, featuring 2018 Elite Women’s World Championships bronze medalists Naomi Graham (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and a trio of medalists from the 2017 Elite Men’s World Championships, including Troy Isley (Alexandra, Va.), Duke Ragan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Freudis Rojas (Las Vegas, Nev.).

Eight boxers will be representing Team USA for their first time in elite international competition, including two-time Youth World Championships bronze medalists Isamary Aquino (San Antonio, Texas), two-time World Champion Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) and 2015 Junior World Championships silver medalists Yarisel Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev.).

Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will lead the American delegation throughout the tournament, along with USA Boxing National Assistant Coach Kay Koroma (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Rasheen Ali (Cleveland, Ohio), Tim Back (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio), Joe Guzman (Fountain, Calif.) and Christine Lopez (Rowlett, Texas) join Koroma and Walsh as members of the coaching staff.

Team USA will look to improve on the five medals they won at the 2018 Strandja Tournament, one gold, one silver and three bronze.
